If you estimate on a MacBook you have already discovered that half the takeoff market pretends you don't exist. This is the practical list: which plan takeoff tools run natively on macOS in 2026, what they cost, the four workarounds Mac estimators use today, and what to check before you pay for anything.

In 2026 the blueprint takeoff tools that run natively on macOS are the browser-based ones: Pilars, Togal.ai, Kreo, STACK, Bobyard, Beam AI and PataBid Quantify. The split is not about quality, it is about architecture. Anything that was written as a Windows desktop application in the 2000s is still a Windows desktop application. Anything built in the last few years was built for the browser, and a browser does not care what chip or operating system is underneath it. So the question "does it run on my Mac" is almost always answered by "is it a website or an installer".

The four ways Mac estimators cope today

Walk through any estimating department with a few MacBooks in it and you will find one of these four setups. Each one works. Each one also has a bill attached that rarely shows up in the software comparison.

1. Use a browser-based tool

The clean option. Kreo, STACK, Togal, Bobyard, Beam and Pilars all open in Safari or Chrome and behave the same on a Mac as on a Windows box. What it costs is simply the subscription. What you give up is the specific muscle memory of whatever desktop tool you learned on, and for some people that is a real loss for a month or two.

2. Run Windows in Parallels

Parallels Desktop lets you run PlanSwift or On-Screen Takeoff inside a window on macOS. It works well on Apple Silicon for most estimating software. The cost stacks up though: a Parallels subscription, a Windows license, the takeoff license itself, and enough RAM to give the virtual machine its own share without your Mac crawling. You also inherit two operating systems to keep updated, and the occasional afternoon lost to a printer driver or a licence activation that thinks it has moved machines.

3. Keep a spare Windows PC

Very common in small shops. There is a Windows laptop or a mini-PC on the corner of the desk whose only job is takeoff. Hardware is a one-time spend, but you now have plans on two machines, files being copied back and forth over email or a shared drive, and a second computer that nobody patches. It is fine for a solo estimator. It gets messy the moment two people need the tool on the same afternoon.

4. Use an iPad app for the light work

Plenty of estimators do markups, quick area checks and site walk notes on an iPad, then move to a desktop for the actual takeoff. The apps are pleasant to use and cheap or free, but none of the mainstream takeoff engines do a full multi-trade takeoff from a tablet. Treat this as a supplement, not a replacement, and budget for one of the three options above anyway.

If you already own a Windows-only license and it is paid through the year, option two or three is rational. If you are choosing new software today, it is hard to justify buying an installer and then buying a second computer to run it on.

What to test before buying plan takeoff for Mac

"Works on Mac" on a pricing page can mean anything from "fully native" to "our sales rep once saw it open in Safari". Run these checks on your own plan set during a trial. They take an hour and they catch nearly every unpleasant surprise.

  • Safari and Chrome, both. Most browser tools are developed in Chrome first. Open the same project in Safari and check that pan, zoom, measurement snapping and file upload all behave. If a vendor says "Chrome only", that is acceptable, but you want to know before your IT policy finds out.
  • Apple Silicon. A browser tool will be fine. A desktop tool in Parallels usually runs, but confirm it on an M-series machine specifically, because Boot Camp is not an option on Apple Silicon and some older installers assume Intel.
  • A real plan set, not the sample. Upload your biggest recent job: the 200-sheet PDF, the scanned as-builts, the set where the architect exported every sheet at 600 dpi. Watch upload time, then watch how the viewer copes with a dense E-series sheet. Vendor demo files are small and clean on purpose.
  • Excel export on the Mac. Export the takeoff and open it in Excel for Mac and in Numbers. Check that the columns, units and sheet references survive. Some tools export a format that only their Windows estimating partner reads properly.
  • Trackpad and a second display. Tracing and counting with a trackpad is different from a mouse. Try a fifteen-minute session the way you would actually work, with a second monitor if you use one.
  • Where the files live. Ask where uploaded plans are stored and for how long, and whether you can delete a project. This matters more when the software is on someone else's server.

The honest case for the Windows-only tools

None of this is an argument that the desktop products are bad. On-Screen Takeoff has been the default in commercial estimating for two decades, and its pairing with Quick Bid is the reason many general contractors will not consider anything else. PlanSwift is fast in the hands of someone who has used it for years and its Excel plugin is genuinely useful. Active Takeoff is a bargain at $299 one-time if all you want is simple counting and measuring on a single Windows machine. Accubid, McCormick and ConEst are entire electrical estimating systems, not just takeoff, and their databases are the product.

The problem for a Mac estimator is not that these tools are weak. It is that using them means paying a second time, in money or in fiddling, just to reach the starting line. If your firm is committed to one of them, the Parallels route is the least painful. If you are not committed yet, do not start there.

Where Pilars fits for a Mac estimator

Pilars was built for the browser from the first day, so it runs on macOS, Apple Silicon and even a Chromebook without a workaround. That part is table stakes now; Kreo and STACK can say the same. The difference is what happens after the upload.

Most browser tools on the list above are faster ways of measuring by hand. A short decision path

You want manual measuring, in a browser

Kreo or STACK. Both run natively on a Mac and both are mature. Expect per-seat pricing and budget the hours, because you are still doing the tracing.

You do architectural or GC takeoffs

Togal.ai is strong at detecting and measuring rooms and areas on floor plans and runs in the browser. It is priced per user, so run the numbers if several people need access.

You are an MEP or trade sub who counts devices and traces runs

Pilars. Whole-set reading, schedule resolution, spec book, code flags, and $100 per trade with no seats. Run the demo on your last bid.

You are locked into PlanSwift or OST this year

Parallels on Apple Silicon is the least bad answer. Test your license activation inside the VM before renewal so you are not surprised twice.
