This is the page you open when a duct, beam or light fixture is sitting near a sprinkler and you need the number, not a lecture. The standard spray upright and pendent table is reproduced below, followed by two worked examples, the three-times rule, the four-foot rule, the 18-inch rule, and what all of it does to a head count.
NFPA 13 sprinkler head distance from obstruction: the table
For standard spray upright and pendent sprinklers, NFPA 13 sets the maximum height a deflector may sit above the bottom of a nearby obstruction (B) based on how far the sprinkler is from the side of that obstruction (A). Under 1 ft away, the deflector cannot be above the obstruction at all; at 7 ft to under 7 ft 6 in away it may be up to 35 in above it. The full table is below.
This is Table 10.2.7.2.1.2 in NFPA 13-2022 (older editions carried the same values as Table 8.6.5.1.2). It applies to obstructions under 4 ft wide that sit close enough to the ceiling to interfere with the spray pattern forming: beams, ducts, pipes, cable trays, lighting, soffits. Measure A horizontally from the sprinkler centerline to the near side of the obstruction, find the row, and B is the most the deflector may be above the underside of that obstruction.

Two things people get wrong reading it. A is measured to the side of the obstruction, not its centerline. And the ranges run up to but not including the next row: 2 ft 6 in exactly belongs to the 7 1/2 in row, not the 5 1/2 in row.
Two worked examples
A 14 in duct, 2 ft 8 in from the sprinkler
A branch line runs parallel to a 14 in wide duct, so the duct is well under 4 ft and the table applies. The horizontal distance from the sprinkler centerline to the near side of the duct scales at 2 ft 8 in. That is the "2 ft 6 in to less than 3 ft" row: B max is 7 1/2 in, so the deflector may be no more than 7 1/2 in above the bottom of the duct.
Now the section. If the duct is 14 in deep and hangs 4 in below the deck, its bottom is 18 in below the deck, and a pendent with its deflector 3 in below the deck is 15 in above the duct bottom. Fifteen is more than 7 1/2, so the head does not comply where it is drawn. The fixes: move the line out to 4 ft 6 in, where B max becomes 16 1/2 in; drop the head on a longer sprig so the deflector sits within 7 1/2 in of the duct bottom; or add a sprinkler under the duct. On a takeoff, the third option is the one that changes your count.
A light fixture, 4 ft 3 in from the sprinkler
A surface-mounted fixture, 6 in deep, is 4 ft 3 in from the sprinkler centerline. That is the "4 ft to less than 4 ft 6 in" row: B max is 14 in. With the deflector 3 in below the ceiling and the fixture bottom 6 in below it, the deflector is 3 in above the bottom of the fixture. Three is less than 14, so the head is fine. Most surface and recessed lighting passes once you are a few feet away; deep pendant lights and high-bay housings are the ones that push B up.
The chart is a relationship, not a single clearance. A head can be 2 ft from a shallow soffit and comply, and 4 ft from a deep duct and fail. You need both A and B, which means a section or a bottom-of-obstruction elevation, not just the reflected ceiling plan.
The NFPA 13 three-times rule
The three-times rule is the shorthand most estimators carry in their heads. For standard spray sprinklers, an obstruction at or below the deflector, such as a column, pipe or light fixture, needs the sprinkler at least three times its greatest dimension away, and the required clearance caps at 24 in. A 4 in pipe needs 12 in. A 6 in column needs 18 in. An 8 in duct needs 24 in, and so does a 12 in one, because 24 in is the ceiling on the requirement. Extended-coverage and sidewall sprinklers use a four-times rule instead, capped at 36 in, because their patterns throw further and are easier to shadow. A sidewall layout along a corridor with sconces or exit signs on the same wall is where this one bites.
The rule-of-thumb form is B no greater than A divided by 3 for uprights and pendents, A divided by 4 for sidewalls. It approximates the chart but is not the chart: at A of 3 ft the thumb rule allows 12 in, the table 9 1/2 in. Use the thumb rule on a walk-through; use the table when placing and counting heads.
The over-4-ft rule and the 18-inch rule
Obstructions more than 4 ft wide
The chart stops at 4 ft. Ducts, wide beams, platforms and similar fixed obstructions over 4 ft wide need sprinklers installed beneath them, because no horizontal offset gets water from a ceiling head to the floor under a 5 ft duct. This is the biggest single source of heads missing from a grid count. A 60 in trunk running 180 ft through an Ordinary Hazard floor is not one obstruction; it is a second row of sprinklers with drops, hangers and pipe of its own.
The 18-inch rule
Separately from spray-pattern development, NFPA 13 requires at least 18 in of clear space between the deflector and the top of storage so the pattern can develop and reach the fuel. The same 18 in is the NFPA 25 inspection test for whether something below a head is blocking discharge. The 18-inch rule does not add heads on a new install; it tells you how high the storage can go under the heads you have.
What the obstruction chart does to a takeoff
The grid count from floor area divided by protection area is the floor of the head count, never the ceiling, and obstructions are where the difference lives. On a clean flat ceiling the grid holds. On a warehouse with bar joists, ducts and lighting it can be 15 to 20 percent light. Here is what to add, in order of how often it is missed.
- Heads under obstructions over 4 ft wide. Count the linear feet of every duct, platform and wide beam over 4 ft and price a line of sprinklers beneath at the hazard's spacing, each with a drop, fittings and a hanger.
- Added heads from the A/B chart. Where a head fails the table and cannot move without breaking spacing elsewhere, it becomes an extra head. The post on NFPA 13 obstruction rules estimators miss walks a 24,000 sf warehouse from 186 grid heads to about 226.
- Longer drops. Getting a deflector down to within B of a duct bottom means a longer sprig than the standard detail. That is pipe, not just a head.
- Pipe and hangers. A second row under a duct is a new line with its own hangers and a tee back to the main.
- Hydraulics. More heads in the remote area changes the calculation, and if pipe sizes move, that is a bigger number than the heads. The hydraulic bid killer post covers that case.
The work is overlaying the reflected ceiling plan, the mechanical plan and the framing plan and checking each obstruction against the chart. Questions estimators actually ask
What is the NFPA 13 obstruction chart?
It is the NFPA 13 table (10.2.7.2.1.2 in the 2022 edition) that sets how far above the bottom of a nearby obstruction a standard spray sprinkler's deflector may sit, based on the horizontal distance from the sprinkler to the side of the obstruction. Under 1 ft away, the deflector may not be above the obstruction at all; at 7 ft away it may be up to 35 in above it.
How far does a sprinkler head have to be from an obstruction under NFPA 13?
It depends on how far the deflector is above the bottom of the obstruction. A deflector 7.5 in above the bottom of a duct needs the sprinkler at least 2 ft 6 in from the side of the duct; 14 in above it needs 4 ft. For isolated obstructions like columns and pipes, the three-times rule requires three times the greatest dimension, up to 24 in.
What is the NFPA 13 three times rule?

When do I need sprinklers under a duct or beam?
When the obstruction is more than 4 ft wide, NFPA 13 requires sprinklers beneath it, because ceiling heads cannot reach the floor under it. Obstructions 4 ft wide or less are handled by the A/B obstruction table instead.
What is the 18 inch rule for sprinklers?
