On-Screen Takeoff has never shipped a Mac version, and the usual answer is to fake a Windows machine. If you have been paying for Parallels or carrying a second laptop just to keep OST, here is what that actually costs, which tools run natively on a Mac, and what to switch to.
Does On-Screen Takeoff work on Mac?
No. On-Screen Takeoff is a Windows desktop application from ConstructConnect and there is no native macOS version. To run it on a Mac you need a Windows environment underneath it: Parallels, another virtual machine, or a separate PC. Boot Camp is not an option on Apple Silicon Macs.
That is not a knock on the product. On-Screen Takeoff (OST) has been the desktop digital-takeoff standard for more than twenty years because it is precise, fast in practised hands, and pairs cleanly with Quick Bid. Plenty of the best estimators in the country do their whole day inside it. The problem is narrower than that: it was built for Windows, it is still sold for Windows, and Apple has spent the last several years making Windows harder to run on a Mac, not easier.
So a Mac estimator who wants OST ends up running two computers inside one, or literally owning two computers. Both work. Neither is free, and neither is as painless as the person who sold you the workaround suggested.
The Mac workarounds for On-Screen Takeoff, and what each one really costs
Every Mac shop that runs OST has picked one of four routes. We have used three of them. Here is the honest version of each.
Parallels Desktop
The most common answer. You buy a Parallels subscription, buy a Windows licence, install Windows inside macOS and install OST inside that. On a modern Mac it runs well. The costs are the two annual licences, the RAM and disk Windows takes for itself, and the fact that you now maintain two operating systems, two sets of updates, two printer setups and two places where plan files live. When either OS pushes a big update, you find out whether OST still launches on Monday morning.
A virtual machine (VMware, UTM and similar)
Same idea as Parallels with a different wrapper. Cheaper in some cases, fiddlier in most. Graphics performance inside a VM is the thing that bites: OST is a drawing tool, and panning a 40-sheet set through a virtualised display layer is where you feel the lag. It works. It does not feel like the native app your Windows colleagues are using.
Boot Camp
For years this was the clean answer: reboot the Mac into real Windows and OST runs natively. Boot Camp is not supported on Apple Silicon Macs, which is every Mac Apple has sold since the Intel line ended. If your machine is an M-series Mac, this route is closed. If you are still on an Intel Mac specifically to keep Boot Camp alive, you are deferring a decision, not avoiding it.
A spare Windows PC
The route most people end up on after the others annoy them enough. A dedicated Windows laptop for OST, the Mac for everything else. The cost is the hardware, a second seat of everything you licence per device, and the daily friction of moving plans, screenshots and exports between machines. It is also the route that quietly makes one person the only one who can do takeoff, because they are the one with the PC.
Add it up and the workaround tax is real money every year plus a slice of every working day. The bigger cost is the one that does not show up on an invoice: the estimator on the Mac is running a slower, more fragile version of a tool their peers run natively, and everyone has decided that is normal.
What a Mac estimator should switch to instead
If you are going to move off OST, do not move to another Windows-only desktop tool and put it in the same VM. PlanSwift, Active Takeoff, Accubid Classic, McCormick and ConEst all have the same constraint; Bluebeam Revu discontinued its Mac version. You would be changing the logo on the problem.
The tools that actually solve it are the ones built for the browser. Safari or Chrome on macOS, nothing installed, no Windows anywhere in the chain. Apple Silicon does not matter because the chip never sees the application. Three things to check before you commit:
- Is it the same product on a Mac? Some vendors ship a cut-down web viewer beside their Windows app and call it Mac support. You want the full tool in the browser, not a companion.
- Where do the plan files live? If the takeoff lives in the account rather than on one machine, the second-computer problem disappears for the whole team, not just for you.
- Does it do the measuring, or do you? A cloud tool that is still manual has fixed the Mac problem and left the forty-hour problem alone. If you are switching anyway, this is the moment to switch to something that counts for you.
That last point is the one most Mac users skip because they have been trained to think of takeoff software as a highlighter that happens to be digital. The current generation reads the set and produces the quantities; your job becomes checking them. The Mac question and the automation question get answered at the same time.

If you decide to keep OST anyway
Some teams will, and that is a reasonable call. If one senior estimator is genuinely faster in OST than anything else and already owns a Windows laptop, there is no rule that says you have to take it away. The pattern we see work is narrower than a full replacement: keep OST on the one Windows machine for ad-hoc measuring and Quick Bid, and run the bulk takeoff for each bid through Pilars from whatever computer the rest of the team is on. The Mac users stop being second-class, the Windows user keeps their tool, and nobody buys another Parallels renewal.
