It is the system a lot of us learned on, the database and labor units are what many contractors calibrate their own numbers against, and there is a deep bench of estimators who can sit down at it on day one. PataBid is younger, built for the browser, and its pitch is that takeoff, pricing and change orders should live in one place with no separate app and no upgrade invoices.
Both are estimating systems first. That distinction matters for the last section of this page, because takeoff is the part of the job that is changing fastest and neither of these is where the change is happening.

Where Accubid still wins
Trust and continuity. Accubid's database and labor units have been argued over, adjusted and defended in bid reviews for decades. When a chief estimator says "our labor is Accubid column two minus fifteen percent for this crew," everybody in the room knows what that means. That shared vocabulary is worth a great deal, and it is the main reason a shop with a working Accubid setup should not move casually.
The assembly libraries are the second reason. An estimator who has spent ten years building branch circuit, feeder and gear assemblies in Accubid has an asset that is genuinely hard to replicate. Even where an export is possible, the labor factors, the condition adjustments and the little things like which fittings a given assembly assumes take time to rebuild and validate somewhere else.
The third reason is people. It is much easier to hire an estimator who already knows Accubid than one who already knows PataBid, and training time is a real cost on a small estimating desk. If most of your work comes from repeat GCs who are used to seeing your bids in a familiar format, that also weighs in.

Where PataBid wins
Simplicity of ownership. One subscription covers the estimating engine, graphical takeoff, supplier pricing and change-order management, and updates and support are in the price. There is no version to install, no separate takeoff app to license, and no question of which release your second estimator is on. For a contractor tired of maintenance invoices that arrive whether or not anything was improved, that predictability is the whole argument.
Platform is the second point, and it is bigger than it sounds. PataBid runs in a browser, so it works on a Mac, on a Chromebook and on a job trailer laptop the same way. Migration considerations: assemblies, labor units, database
Whichever direction you move, plan for these before you sign anything.
- Assemblies. Inventory the assemblies you actually use in a typical year, not the total library. Rebuild the thirty to fifty you actually use first, re-price a job you already bid, and compare line by line before you trust it.
- Labor units. Write down what you have adjusted. Every experienced estimator carries labor factors that live partly in the software and partly in their head, and the ones in their head do not migrate. Get them into a document so the new database can be tuned to match.
- Material database and pricing. Decide where your prices come from. PataBid's supplier pricing feeds and Accubid's database are both starting points that you override with your own distributor quotes on a real bid. Confirm units of measure on your most-used items; wire priced per thousand feet in one system and per foot in another will be found by the GC, not by you.
- Parallel period. Run both systems on two or three live bids. It is the only way to find the assumptions that never made it into any document.
Five-year math, since people ask: one PataBid license is $2,460 × 5 = $12,300. How AI takeoff feeds either estimating system
Pilars is not an Accubid alternative in the database sense and it is not a PataBid alternative either. It does not carry labor units, it does not price material, and it does not produce a bid. What it does is the part both systems still leave to a person: reading the drawings.
