I have used both on real bid work, and the comparison is less about which is "better" than about how much tool you actually need. PlanSwift is sold by ConstructConnect, has been around for well over a decade, and has grown a large plugin ecosystem. Active Takeoff comes from Quoter Software in Canada, is a smaller product with a smaller footprint, and the people who use it tend to like it precisely because it does not try to be everything.

Both are manual point-and-click takeoff. Neither reads the drawings for you. Whatever you choose between these two, the estimator is still the one finding every receptacle and tracing every partition.

What PlanSwift does that Active Takeoff does not

The gap is real and it is mostly in what happens after you measure. PlanSwift lets you build assemblies: click a wall once and it can generate studs, plates, sheathing, screws and labor as separate line items with your own unit costs behind them. If you have spent years tuning those assemblies, they are the reason you stay on PlanSwift. The Excel integration is the other big one. Quantities flow into your own workbook, formulas update, and your estimate is whatever spreadsheet you already trust.

The plugin marketplace matters for some trades more than others. Roofers, concrete contractors and framers have plugin packs that add trade-specific math. What you pay for that depth is complexity. PlanSwift has a lot of buttons, and a new hire will spend a week or two before their takeoffs are trustworthy. Active Takeoff software review: what it gets right

Active Takeoff is easy to underestimate because of the price. The honest review is that for counts, linear measurements and areas on a PDF plan, it does the job with less friction than PlanSwift. The interface is uncluttered, scale setting is straightforward, and you can be doing useful work the same afternoon you install it. Several small subs I know bought it because they were tired of paying a subscription for features they never opened.

It pairs naturally with Quoter, the estimating product from the same company, so a takeoff can move into a priced estimate without leaving the vendor's ecosystem. If you do not use Quoter, you export quantities and price them in your own spreadsheet, which is how most small shops work anyway.

The limits are the flip side of the simplicity. There is no equivalent to PlanSwift's assembly builder or plugin marketplace, the reporting is lighter, and there is no large third-party community producing templates and training. It is also Windows desktop, so the same Mac problem applies. If your takeoffs are mostly "count these, measure those, put it in a sheet," none of that will bother you. If you want the tool to build the estimate, it will.

This is where the two products stop looking like peers. Run the math per seat over five years, which is roughly how long a takeoff tool lasts in a shop before somebody reevaluates.

A few caveats so this is fair. The PlanSwift figure uses the subscription price; if you bought a perpetual license at $1,595 with $200 per year support, five years lands nearer $2,595 per seat, which is still several times Active Takeoff but not the same order of magnitude. Active Takeoff's one-time price does not include any paid major-version upgrades the vendor may release, and perpetual licenses in general leave you responsible for compatibility when Windows moves on. The bigger point is that the license cost on either side is small next to the hours. A commercial takeoff done by hand in either tool still runs 40 to 80 hours per set, and that labor dwarfs the software line on every one of these rows.
