The confusion is understandable, because the product is named after the activity. Twenty-odd years ago the alternative to a printed set, a scale ruler and a highlighter was to do the same job on a screen, and a product that let you do exactly that called itself On-Screen Takeoff. It became the standard, the name stuck, and estimators started using it the way people say Kleenex. So today an electrical estimator saying "I do on-screen takeoff" might mean they own OST, or might just mean they stopped printing sets.

When you add "cloud" to that phrase, the two meanings pull apart. One is a specific Windows program that is not cloud-based. The other is a category in which almost everything new is.

The product and the practice, side by side

On-Screen Takeoff, the product

A mature manual takeoff application from ConstructConnect. On-screen takeoff, the practice

Any method of pulling quantities from a digital plan on a screen rather than paper. That now spans a free PDF viewer with a measure tool, desktop programs like OST and PlanSwift, browser tools like STACK and Kreo where you still draw, and automated systems like Pilars where the software reads the set and you review the result. The practice has moved to the cloud. The original product has not.

Keeping the two straight matters when you are buying, because "we need cloud-based on-screen takeoff" can be answered with a hosted copy of a desktop app, a browser tool that is still fully manual, or something that changes the job. Those are three very different purchases at three very different prices.

What cloud-based should mean in 2026

Cloud has been a marketing word for long enough that it is worth pinning down. A tool that runs on a vendor's server but still needs a Windows installer, or a remote desktop session into somebody else's PC, is cloud-hosted. It is not what most estimators are asking for.   • Nothing is locked to a seat. If the pricing is per user, the cloud has just moved the licence server, not the constraint.
  • Ideally, it does the counting. This is the part the phrase "on-screen takeoff" does not capture, because the phrase was coined for a manual process. A cloud tool where you still click every receptacle has fixed the install problem and left the forty-hour problem alone.

The last point is the one that separates the current generation from the previous one. The move from paper to screen roughly halved takeoff time for people who got good at the tools. The move from screen to automated is a different order of change: the software produces the quantities, and the estimator's hours go into review, scope and risk instead of tracing.

  3. Where are the plan files stored, and can two people open the same project at once?
  4. Are updates automatic and silent, or do you ever manage a version?
  5. Is pricing per seat, per project, or per trade? What happens to cost when you add a fourth estimator?
  6. Does it measure, or do you? If it is manual, how is it faster than the desktop tool you have?
  7. If it is automated, does it read schedules and the spec book, or only the drawings?
  8. Does every quantity come back with a confidence score and a sheet reference so you can check it?
  9. What is the export: Excel, a BOQ, a link into your estimating system?
  10. If you stop paying, can you still get your takeoffs out?

Two of those, six and seven, are where most "online on-screen takeoff" products quietly fail. Plenty run in a browser. Far fewer do the work.

Cloud is the delivery. Automation is the point.

Where cloud tools still fall short, ours included

A fair page should say this. A browser needs a connection, and a jobsite trailer with bad signal is a worse place to run any cloud tool than a laptop with a desktop app installed. Very large scanned sets take time to upload. And a cloud tool that is manual, which describes most of them, gives you portability and sharing but not speed; if you were quick in OST, you may find a browser drawing tool slower, not faster, because the desktop application has twenty years of keyboard shortcuts behind it.

Automated tools have their own honest limit: they are not perfect, which is why the confidence score exists. A 97.5% count is not a 100% count, and the review step is not optional. What changes is that reviewing two hundred flagged quantities takes an hour, and counting them from scratch took a day.
